Wooden architecture in the helsinki region

Bus tour

Pekka Heikkinen

Starting from Hotel Radisson Blu Otanemi at i 12:30 and from Kiasma Museum Helsinki city Center at 13:00

Over the past ten years the scale and number of wooden buildings in the Helsinki area has been on the increase. From offices and apartment blocks to community buildings, many of these projects have served as a means for architects and builders to test new technologies and ways of building in wood. Architect and Professor Pekka Heikkinen will guide an excursion by bus to visit a selection of wooden buildings in the Helsinki region that have helped to pave the way for a new era of wood construction in Finland.

14:00

II.
Modern Classics on and around the Otaniemi Campus

Philip Tidwell

Otaniemi and nearby Tapiola are home to some of the highlights of Finnish modernism from the campus designed by Alvar Aalto to the churches, chapels and student buildings executed by the Siréns, Aarno Ruusuvuori and Aarne Ervi. This afternoon walk with architect and teacher Philip Tidwell will be an opportunity to visit and hear more about these remarkable experiments in wood and concrete. The tour will begin on the Otaniemi campus and conclude at the Tapiola Cultural Center for the opening reception of the conference.

14:00

III.
VISIT TO STORA ENSO HEADQUARTERS

Meeting in front of building
Adress: Katajanokanranta 1

Unique possibility to visit the headquarters of Stora Enso (Enso Gutzeit) designed by Alvar Aalto. The building was originally finished in 2020 and has been renovated and up-dated to meet today’s office work’s requirements in 2020–2020 (A-konsultit)

Wood research and education

Wood is a material that is universally familiar, yet highly specific to each particular locality. Variations in species, techniques of construction and historical associations allow timber buildings to embody and reflect the culture in which they are constructed. This session asks four speakers from different regions to offer their perspectives on the relationship between historical traditions and contemporary techniques, proposing future trajectories for the material and future avenues for exploration.

Today, as ever, architects and engineers confront a rapidly developing field of design and construction. New techniques and technologies for the design and assembly of buildings enable new possibilities for architectural form, while also presenting new challenges for architects and builders. This session will introduce practitioners whose work is located at the intersections between form, material and computation.

Education, research and experimentation are the fundamentals of future development. But where does the future point to? What do we study now, and how do we prepare for the future in Finland, in Europe and in the United States?

Session C2

Business outlook

The majority of our lives are spent indoors. Interior spaces and materials affect our physical and psychological well-being and comfort. However, the effect of material choices is still poorly understood. This session discusses the role of interior environments including the impacts of timber-based materials on human health, indoor air quality, and human perceptions of wood. The session presents research outcomes from the ongoing Wood2New and Wood Life projects. It also highlights new knowledge supporting sustainable and energy-efficient construction in wood.

As a means to tackle climate change and decrease our carbon dioxide emissions, the energy efficiency of buildings currently targets Near to Zero Energy Building (nZEB). Zero Emission Buildings are seen as the next logical step in this development. This session focuses on resilient timber buildings of the future and timber-based solutions including hygrothermal mass and life-cycle analysis of buildings.

After some challenging years the outlook for building and construction shows some positive signs. What are the means to increase the share of wood construction? Political support, what can be done on the political arena? What are the new approaches among the investors and construction companies? This session presents the latest construction outlook, highlights the importance of the political agenda and showcases exciting new approaches and new entries in the business.

Session C3

Business cases

Urbanisation is a global phenomenon that includes opportunities and threats, but what is the role of wood in sustainable urban life? How can it be used in ways that answer to different needs of urban construction? Globally, the wold anticipates major development in urban infrastructures over the next 15 years. This session offers different examples of using wood in modern cities.

The use of timber as a structural building material has been established within the last decades. Accordingly, the requirements of timber structures in respect to durability, acoustics, etc. increases. This session focus on variable aspects related to the structural design of timber constructions.

What do clients want? What features make wood construction interesting? When is the use of wood is proven competitive? Does the existing supply meet demand? This session highlights the viewpoints from real life constructors and clients, both public and private.

Normative development

Session C4

Advanced wood materials

The need for repair and renovation of wooden structures is growing. Moisture problems, insufficient thermal insulation, technical failures and a loss of functional value demand reconstruction, often without warning. What is the role of wood in refurbishment and reuse projects? How can wooden structures be repaired in a sustainable manner? What should designers and constructors take into account when they aim to repair buildings using wood? These topics will be discussed from several perspectives with a view toward subjects for future research.

Normative development is in a very active phase in Europe. European harmonized EN standards are continuously being drafted and CE-marking of building products is commonly required. In principle a common market exists. Eurocodes are also under a major revision with a goal to achieve easier use for designers. Building regulations are being updated in many member states and environmental performance of building products is also foreseen to be required in the near future.

Against a backdrop of increasing environmental concerns and the need to create a circular economy, recent years have seen rapid developments in the area of wood materials research that have led to the introduction of many new products such as modified wood, CLT and WPCs. Significant advances have been made in the area of wood modification, in which Finland has been a pioneer; new building products such as CLT are transforming construction, whilst there is a great deal of interest in the potential of nanocellulose in a host of possible applications. The aim of this session is to provide a brief review of some of the key developments that have taken place in the area of wood materials research and that are likely to arise in the foreseeable future.
