Wood city trondheim
Trondheim is an old wooden town, and still there are a lot of historic wooden buildings in the city. The urban development project Wood City Trondheim was established by the City of Trondheim in 2020. The aim is further development of the historic wood buildings and to introduce urban new buildings made from wood.
The last 13 years a number of innovative building are built in Trondheim with high ambitions in the use of wood and energy solutions. Read the report here
NTNU AND sintef
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is today Norway’s largest university with roughly 39’000 students as of 2020. NTNU specialises in the technical and natural sciences. 80 percent of all Norwegian engineers are graduates from NTNU.
NTNU Wood is an interdisciplinary investment into the use of wood in Norway. The center aims at developing research and education that allows the forestry, timber and construction industry to participate in the best possible way towards a greener way of thinking and a more environmentally friendly society.
The Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research (SINTEF) is Scandinavia’s largest independent research organisation. SINTEF is located in Oslo and Trondheim, where they share premises with NTNU. They create values and innovation by developing knowledge and technology which in turn is used by industry players and public enterprises.

Research centres on climate change
Together, SINTEF and NTNU lead two research centres on climate change where i.a., climate-friendly construction materials are a focus:
- Klima 2050 will reduce the societal risks associated with climate changes and enhanced precipitation and flood water exposure within the built environment.
- Zero Emission Neighbourhood in Smart Cities (ZEN) will develop competitive products and solutions that will lead to realisation of sustainable neighbourhoods that have zero emissions of greenhouse gases related to their production, operation and transformation.
ZEB Living Lab and ZEB Test Cell are multipurpose experimental facilities built by Zero Emission Buildings, Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts, NTNU. ZEB Flexible Lab is in its planning phase, with construction to start in 2018. The lab becomes a full-scale office buildings where NTNU and SINTEF will test out new zero-emission technology.
