I. Wooden Architecture in the Helsinki Region

Bus tour beginning at 13:00 from Kamppi Chapel, Simonkatu 7 in Helsinki city center or you can start from Hotel Radison SAS in Otaniemi, Espoo at 12:30

Over the past ten years the scale and number of wooden buildings in the Helsinki area has been on the increase. From offices and apartment blocks to community buildings, many of these projects have served as a means for architects and builders to test new technologies and ways of building in wood. Architect and Professor Pekka Heikkinen will guide an excursion by bus to visit a selection of wooden buildings in the Helsinki region that have helped to pave the way for a new era of wood construction in Finland.

II. Modern Classics on and around the Otaniemi Campus

Walking tour beginning at 15:00 from Aalto University main building, Otakaari 1, entrance hall lobby.

Otaniemi and nearby Tapiola are home to some of the highlights of Finnish modernism from the campus designed by Alvar Aalto to the churches, chapels and student buildings executed by the Siréns, Aarno Ruusuvuori and Aarne Ervi. This afternoon walk with architect and teacher Philip Tidwell will be an opportunity to visit and hear more about these remarkable experiments in wood and concrete. The tour will begin on the Otaniemi campus and conclude at the Tapiola Cultural Center for the opening reception of the conference.

III.Visit to Stora Enso headquarters

Unique possibility to visit the headquarters of Stora Enso designed by Alvar Aalto. The building was originally finished in 2020 and has been renovated and up-dated to meet today’s office work’s requirements in 2020-2020 (A-konsultit)
